Why Professional Development is Important: Three Things I Learned While Getting My CPRC

As part of our dedication to employees and clients, we recognize that professional development plays an important role in sustaining our high level of client servicing while helping team members advance in their MCG careers.

As part of our professional development offerings, this winter I decided to pursue my Certified Public Relations Counselor (CPRC) accreditation.

For those of you not in the industry, this is the second tier certificated offered by the Florida Public Relations Association to those who have already earned their Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) designation. The certification was created to recognize professional growth and achievement of senior practitioners in our industry. Candidates for CPRC must be a member of FPRA and have a minimum of 10 years of professional practice in public relations.

I received the great news last week, that I passed the written and oral portions of the certification and can now join my top-notch agency team members Karen B. MooreTerrie Ard and Nanette Schimpf in adding these four letters after my name. I am proud that our agency holds more CPRC certifications than any other agency.

So after 10 years in the industry, what did the CPRC show me that I have learned?

1. The RIPE method always helps me think through a strategic action plan.

The written portion of the certification process included 16 case study scenarios where I was tasked with providing recommended counsel. For every case study, I simply followed the Research, Implementation, Planning and Evaluation method to articulate the best course of action. This coupled with my real-world experience helped me to provide quick counsel.

2. Presenting has become second nature.

For the oral  portion of the process, I was asked to give a 30 minute presentation to three CPRCs on a presentation I have recently given to a client. The goal of the 30-minute presentation was to “sell” an idea or a course of action. While presenting to your peers, may be the hardest environment, it showed me that presenting has become such an integral part of my day-to-day job, and has allowed me to grow these skills, knowing I am confident in what I am recommending.

3. I can trust my gut.

For me, the real AHA moment of the process, was the fact that my experience with such diverse environments, industries, clients and scopes of work prepared me very well for this certification. I left the process with a new level of confidence knowing that I can trust my gut in my day-to-day work where I am required to make dozens of quick decisions each day.

I am proud to be joining the less than 100 individuals in Florida holding this certification, and will continue to follow the RIPE method, fine tune my presentation skills and trust my gut!
